There’s a better way

As a vendor, the best way to get my attention is to be a bit of a squeaky wheel. To gently prod me over and over again until I say, "I'm busy right now, and don't have time to set up a meeting with you. Give me a little space, and I'll set up a meeting when I have time and we can discuss what you are selling."

The best way to guarantee that I will never buy anything from you is to then come to my office, unannounced, two days later and try to start an impromptu meeting on the spot. It's rude and obnoxious and makes me want to never do business with you.

I suppose this tactic must work with some people. Maybe it bowls them over and leaves them incapable of doing anything but complying – but it makes me think of bullies.

The better choice? It's simple, I told him what I needed from him. Just do it. Give me a little space. Put it on your calendar to contact me again in two weeks. It would have made me feel like he was actually listening to me; and it would have given me the impression that here is a salesman that is genuinely interested in making me happy instead of just trying to force a sale down my throat.

Kentridge’s Five Themes

Dana, Matilda and I finally made it over to The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth to see their newest exhibit: William Kentridge: Five Themes.

We'd been hoping to see it since it opened on July 12th.

Annie, a long time friend, and her two kids, Ian and Dylan came along.

The exhibit is a great mixture of media – Kentridge uses mostly charcoal on paper in conjunction with multimedia video and projections to communicate with his audiences. The films are short pieces on repeat and animations created by drawing and erasing over the same page over and over between frames.

But, by far, his greatest piece stands all by itself and is something of a marvel. It's a round top table with a canvas on top and seamless cylindrical mirror at its center. A projector, above the table, projects animations onto the canvas and the reflection is seen in the mirror.

You should definitely check this exhibit out if you can. It's showing through September 27th – Also, check out the podcast I recorded with the chief curator about Kentridge:

Degloving is a Medical Term

This is an amazing prosthetic created by i-limb. It looks real and evidently gives its user an extremely versatile arm that’s really easy to learn.

But, once he said it, the only think I can think about when I watch this video is the term he used to describe what happened to his original, non-star-wars arm – which was caught between a car door and a wooden post. It’s called degloving and it makes me want to scream.

The Crucible

Stage West produced a shortened version of The Crucible that played for one week only in early October. And you had to be either a high school or middle school student in the Fort Worth Independent School District to see it.

It was a great show, the re-write was done very, very well, and the cast was excellent. And, I was lucky enough to be the Stage Manager for the show. I edited this video together last night, and I hope you enjoy it.
